Welcome Back

So here I am again...I think that i am going to try this blogging thing again. I need somewhere to vent and share our story.

Last week Monday on feb 28 2011 we found out that our daughter ellison has type i diabetes.  i had a idea that something wasnt right with her for a few months but of course i was over reacting.  thank goodness her teacher made a comment about her thirst and frequent potty visits.  so i called the dr and went in and after a pee test and her finger being pricked we found out that yes something was not right.  Ellie had 498 and normal is like 70-100.  we then went to the er and there we had more blood work and iv of fluids a shot of lantus (insulin) then sent home.  We then went to childrens in milwaukee tuesday morning.  Ellie and i learned all about her future and treatment of her diabetes. later we met up with my cousin jessica and her 2 kids alaina and cj.  talking to her made me feel more at ease.  after hitting the build a bear store at the mayfair mall we headed back home.

when we got home we told daddy and taylor all about our day and what we have learned. we have to give ellie 4 shots a day.  we check her blood as soon as she gets up and then we give her insulin based on her blood sugar level. also we check her ketones in the morning to make sure they are at a safe level.  repeat at lunch and dinner. she is then given a different type of insulin at night before bed.  right now we are on a carb based diet.  each meal she needs to have 60 grams of carbs and she gets 3 snacks each of them need to be 15 grams.  so it is fun times trying to make my 6 year old eat when she isnt hungry.  we also have to eat at certain times which is a huge change for ellie since she always just ate when and what she wanted.

Ellison has gone back to school now and has a nurse with her in her room at all times.  we had some hiccups the first day back but we have fixed that.  ellie's nurses name is amanda and so far we really like her. she will have a nurse with her the rest of the year and maybe the beginning of next year yet.  the reason is she doesn't know how her body will react to a low and she isn't giving her shots to herself yet either.

this past wednesday we went to day 2 of diabetes school.  tom and taylor also joined us since it was childrens in neenah.  we learned how to treat lows and highs and also met with a social worker who helps us cope as a family.  next wednesday is day 3 and hopefully ellie's diet will be changed and she can eat like she used too!!

my aunt set up a team to walk for jdrf it is called team ellie!! here is the linkhttp://www2.jdrf.org/site/TR/Walk-WI/Chapter-NortheastWisconsin4720?px=1261955&pg=personal&fr_id=1302 for our personal page.  if you are intersted in joining our team there is a link on my page that will direct you to the team page.

alrighty i better get ready for work and i look forward to blogging about of new journey in life!! Hugs!
