3 months

So it has been 3 months since Ellie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.  We had her checkup which we will do every 3 months to monitor her.  Right now her ac # is 6.8 which is good.  When she was first diagnosed it was off the charts!! 7 is the golden #.  they also told me that she is honeymooning, which means her pancreas still is working when it feels like.  So right now she isn't needing a lot of insulin. Since the appointment I have already noticed a difference in her numbers and insulin units so I am sure we will be changing  things around soon.
On June 20th the whole family went down to Childrens hospital to be in a diabetes family study.  We will know something in like 4 months.  They will let us know if anyone else has DNA markers that will make us in a higher risk group.  It will also help the scientist figure out why some families get this and maybe help find a cure!!!

as for the summer the girls are in some sports.  Ellie is almost done with soccer and Taylor is in a basketball league and this week she is in a basketball camp.  Taylor is also heading up north with a girlfriend on July 1st-July 9th.  She is growing up to fast!! When she gets home that Sunday we are heading down to miller park to watch the Brewers take on the Reds!! That is all I have for now....Hugs xoxo Nichole

Lows...

Last week we had a very low week.... I know that this is a process of figuring out dosing and carb ratio. I think we might have gotten there.

Last week Monday thru Thursday every time Ellie at lunch and supper about 1 hour later she was complaining that she didn't feel right.  We would check her and she would be low.  I was ok the first day or so but then I started to get frustrated.  Then Wednesday night she was low before bed which was not normal. I was at work and totally nervous and worried.  I knew she was in good hands at my sisters but I am the Mom and I should be there. I finally got a hold of the Dr. and they decided to change her carb ratio at lunch and supper from 18 to 22. So far we have noticed a difference.

This week I am on the crappy shift were I don't see my family except for 1 hour a day.  I know they will be fine but by Thursday I get sad and miss them!! So I hope this week goes fast.  Hope you all have a great week!! Hugs Nichole

Spring Break

So here we are on Spring Break and we are laying low at home.  I am totally enjoying it to.  The girls on the other hand are not to happy but so is life.

Ellie is doing great.  We went to the Dr. last week and she gained 5 lbs. and is looking awesome!!  Her diet has changed to letting her being able to eat what she wants with in reason. So at meal time we check her BG (blood glucose) and figure her carbs out in her meal. Then we plug these numbers into a nifty little formula the Dr. gave us and that will give us her insulin dosage.  Very cool if you ask me.  We did have some lows finally, and Ellie is doing very good by letting us know when she is feeling weird and shaky.  So we check her and then if she is low we give her some juice and she is back to normal!!  Ellie has also lost 2 teeth these week! She looks so fricken cute with out a front tooth!!

This Saturday the girls will be sleeping over at my sister's house.  It is the first time they have slept somewhere since Ellie was diagnosed.  I know it will be fine since she has given Ellie her insulin before.  My sister will have to give her the nighttime shot which only Tom or I have given.  I know it will be just fine.  Taylor will be there to supervise and let them know how we do things!! I am so blessed to have my kids who look out for each other! If we do anything exciting in the last few days of spring break I will be sure to share. Godspeed loves!! *hugs* Nichole xoxo

Welcome Back

So here I am again...I think that i am going to try this blogging thing again. I need somewhere to vent and share our story.

Last week Monday on feb 28 2011 we found out that our daughter ellison has type i diabetes.  i had a idea that something wasnt right with her for a few months but of course i was over reacting.  thank goodness her teacher made a comment about her thirst and frequent potty visits.  so i called the dr and went in and after a pee test and her finger being pricked we found out that yes something was not right.  Ellie had 498 and normal is like 70-100.  we then went to the er and there we had more blood work and iv of fluids a shot of lantus (insulin) then sent home.  We then went to childrens in milwaukee tuesday morning.  Ellie and i learned all about her future and treatment of her diabetes. later we met up with my cousin jessica and her 2 kids alaina and cj.  talking to her made me feel more at ease.  after hitting the build a bear store at the mayfair mall we headed back home.

when we got home we told daddy and taylor all about our day and what we have learned. we have to give ellie 4 shots a day.  we check her blood as soon as she gets up and then we give her insulin based on her blood sugar level. also we check her ketones in the morning to make sure they are at a safe level.  repeat at lunch and dinner. she is then given a different type of insulin at night before bed.  right now we are on a carb based diet.  each meal she needs to have 60 grams of carbs and she gets 3 snacks each of them need to be 15 grams.  so it is fun times trying to make my 6 year old eat when she isnt hungry.  we also have to eat at certain times which is a huge change for ellie since she always just ate when and what she wanted.

Ellison has gone back to school now and has a nurse with her in her room at all times.  we had some hiccups the first day back but we have fixed that.  ellie's nurses name is amanda and so far we really like her. she will have a nurse with her the rest of the year and maybe the beginning of next year yet.  the reason is she doesn't know how her body will react to a low and she isn't giving her shots to herself yet either.

this past wednesday we went to day 2 of diabetes school.  tom and taylor also joined us since it was childrens in neenah.  we learned how to treat lows and highs and also met with a social worker who helps us cope as a family.  next wednesday is day 3 and hopefully ellie's diet will be changed and she can eat like she used too!!

my aunt set up a team to walk for jdrf it is called team ellie!! here is the linkhttp://www2.jdrf.org/site/TR/Walk-WI/Chapter-NortheastWisconsin4720?px=1261955&pg=personal&fr_id=1302 for our personal page.  if you are intersted in joining our team there is a link on my page that will direct you to the team page.

alrighty i better get ready for work and i look forward to blogging about of new journey in life!! Hugs!
